Research in Education Technology

This course focuses on developing skills, insights, and understanding basics to performing research with emphasis on interpretation, application, critique, and use of findings in educational settings. Students develop expertise in action research methodology, design, and implementation. It describes fundamental concepts and practices in educational research in technology. Specific applications of educational research methods to problems in instructional design, instructional and/or assistive technologies will be covered. Emphasis is on reviewing and critiquing technology-based research, as well as preparing research proposals for the needs assessment, usability testing, and/or classroom research for teachers.
Reflections & Insights
This is a required course that I admit having put off until the end of my program. I had little interest in conducting literary reviews let alone conduct research. Little did I know that I was in for much more! After completing the online CITI training course, I learned that in order to even consider beginning the process of research involving human subjects. Following this eye-opening experience I learned how to identify an empirical study versus a literary review, case study, or other types of articles that in some instances claim to be research.
I further discovered and investigated the various designs, methods, and other characteristics of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies. Though I do not claim to be an expert in this field, I am certainly a better consumer of research as a whole and have developed an appreciation for the level of effort necessary to conduct a study and am intrigued with the potential for research in my own field.
